The first idea for BPE was born in the autumn of 2007, at a time when the tension between the USA and Iran had reached such severe levels that the USA had just stationed battleships in the area.
At the time it was clear that the prior invasion of neighbouring Iraq was based on a lie. This hit home even worse knowing that not only had my home nation, the Dutch government, supported the invasion of Iraq but now it seemed “we” had all learned nothing and the USA were about to start a war with Iran.
Borne out of disdain of our human stupidity and total carelessness for the lives of our fellow human beings, we concluded that we had to stop this ongoing suffering we were causing to each other. Our aim was to have a massive festival in Tehran, through which we, the 21st century generation, could demonstrate we choose to be friends and act as a human shield of affection in an attempt to stop the USA from bombing. This was the starting point of what eventually led to the official launch of BPE in May of last year.
We started BPE because we believe in a world where every human life is valued equally, a world where we all understand that we are not only part of one human family, but also part of this ecosystem we call earth.
To live in such a world, all we have to do is build it. This may not be an easy task but it is a possible one, one which we as BPE community try to do, we build, one step at a time!
Our next step takes us back to where it all started, back to Iran.
To be continued…
